The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is auctioning an area of the Congo River Basin the size of Virginia to oil companies. Not only does this risk poisoning the water supply of 75 million people and displacing 150 ethnic groups, not only will it drive several endangered species to extinction (such as the Mountain Gorilla), but since the Congo River Basin contains some of the most important carbon sinks on the planet (ecosystems like the rainforest and the peat wetland that absorb more CO2 than they emit) this short-sighted plan could be a climate tipping point that, without exaggeration, could threaten all of humanity.
